Dr. Mike Smith over at Kingston University has some interesting words and links:

Slashdot reported earlier this year on the FOSS4G web server benchmarking. The big news was that ESRI were taking part, but then pulled out. The hope was to get both ESRI and MapGuide in to the frame to see how they did. With the recently announced ERDAS 2010 released, Chris Tweedie over at ERDAS took it upon himself to run some benchmarks (also reported in Slashdot). The results certainly look impressive (up to twice as fast as Mapserver) which I guess is why they were happy to put the product forward. ESRIs silence is deafening....

Looking forward to the next FOSS4G shootout…

ERDAS announces LPS eATE, a new module for generating high-resolution terrain information from stereo imagery. The LPS eATE technology preview provides a sample of the new ERDAS terrain processing solution. ERDAS eATE will be formally released in 2010.

LPS eATE is an add-on module to LPS, an integrated suite of workflow-oriented photogrammetry software tools for production mapping, including the generation of digital terrain models, orthophoto production and 3D feature extraction. Automating precision measurement, maintaining accuracy and including flexible operations such as image mosaicking, LPS increases productivity while ensuring high accuracy.

Easily scalable, LPS eATE is an ideal solution for both small and large terrain generation jobs. LPS eATE utilizes the power of multi-core computer systems and supports parallel processing across a networked group of computers.

Providing an unparalleled environment for processing terrain data, LPS eATE can handle a wide range of data input, from satellite to airborne frame to digital pushbroom sensor. With modern airborne and satellite sensors achieving increasingly higher resolutions, LPS eATE maximizes this image resolution and generates high-density results. With terrain processing options, users have complete control over their results.

LPS eATE also includes tools for producing LAS point clouds. Increasing flexibility, LPS eATE supports the ability to visualize imagery in 3D by associating RGB values with terrain points in a LAS file. Additionally, the output point clouds can be classified and automatically filtered to remove undesired objects as an integrated part of the eATE process.

“Production mapping professionals are demanding experts who inherently understand what accuracy and reliability mean. With an increasing number of sensors delivering vast amounts of raw imagery every day, they need to rely on powerful tools that boost their productivity,” said Mladen Stojic, Senior Vice President, Product Management & Marketing, ERDAS. “LPS eATE provides a set of tools to produce high-resolution terrain information from stereo imagery in a shorter timeframe.”

During this webinar, we will seamlessly work through a local government’s dataset, showcasing the entire geoprocessing workflow. This webinar will illustrate how to author spatial data models in ERDAS IMAGINE, catalogue and serve these models as OGC WPS in ERDAS APOLLO and consume and use the WPS in the ERDAS TITAN client and other web applications.

ERDAS provides the most interoperable geoprocessing services in the industry. Users can run an entire model (such as change detection), completely contained within a single WPS process. The complexity of the algorithm stored under a single process is unique, enabling an end-user to create on demand line of sight, elevation change, image change detection and more.

During this webinar, you will have direct interaction with the presenter to ask questions. Inspired by the Ribbon, a relatively new way of replacing menus and toolbars in software, ERDAS IMAGINE 2010 combines a heterogeneous set of applications in a simple, easy to use and easy to learn UI. Other useful features include the ability to have multiple views, visualize data in different modes; create custom workflows, allowing the development and packaging of specialized workflows; and a “Shoebox” data repository, enabling project teams to share datasets quickly.

During this webinar, you will have direct interaction with the presenter (Ian Anderson, Director of Remote Sensing at ERDAS) to ask questions. Despite attendance being a tad down on last year, we felt that again these two days went extraordinarily well.

It’s great to be able to meet up with so many of our users and get first hand feedback as to what everyone is using the software for and also getting a heads up on the niggles and difficulties encountered. We’ve had a quick look at the feedback, and it seems that pretty much all of you found the conference to be both useful and enjoyable. One of the key points in the feedback seemed to be the liking for hands-on sessions: you want more, larger and longer. Logistically, it’s tricky to set this sort of thing up, but we’ll be looking at ways to try and accomplish this.

We’d like to thank all our speakers, who gave great talks on a wide range of subjects. Special thanks: to Ian Anderson for coming over from Atlanta and being the voice of technical ERDAS; to Dr. Thomas Bayer for the keynote speech; to Phil Cooper for services to speaking above and beyond the call of duty (he’ll regain his voice in a week or so I’m sure) and again to Sharon Jordan who magnificently marshalled both us before the conference and everyone during it.

Hope to see you all next year!

ERDAS announces Experience ERDAS IMAGINE 2010 Scalability, a free webinar on September 29, 2009 at 4pm BST

This informative webinar illustrates the benefits of ERDAS IMAGINE 2010's increased scalability, and its ability to easily handle the size or quantity of drastically increasing data. ERDAS IMAGINE 2010 is a performance-oriented, remote sensing, photogrammetry and geospatial analysis solution, seamlessly fusing the strengths of ERDAS' products.

A significant enhancement in this release is product scalability, making key components thread-safe, and threading them, providing ever increasing code efficiency, multi-processing and more. Examples that will be covered in this webinar include using the batch tool to run a number of parallel processes; the RPF production tool running parallel processes with the creation of cells and the multithreaded mosaic tool and pyramid layer creation tools.

To register for Experience ERDAS IMAGINE 2010 Scalability, please visit:

http://www.erdas.com/Resources/Webinars/UpcomingWebinars/tabid/91/currentid/3066/objectid/3066/default.aspx

Everything is set up, and all we have to do is wait for all our delegates to turn up tomorrow.

Don’t forget if you’re coming, that there’s no parking at the college. Please use the Pear Tree Park and Ride on the ring road.

This is the first time we’ll be able to show ERDAS 2010 off with its new, ribbon interface. It’s still in beta, but I’ve had a little play already and it both looks and feels good. I’ll post more info after Ian Anderson’s talk and seminar later tomorrow.

However, now it’s time to get our throats lubricated for all the talking we’ll be doing over the next couple of days…
